TOP 3 BREAST PROBLEMS FACED BY A NEW MOTHER!
TOP THREE BREAST PROBLEMS FACED BY A BREAST FEEDING MOTHER
Dear parents,
Breast feeding is said to be a best gift a mother can give to her baby. Breast feeding is both science and art . Breast feeding not only benefits baby but mother as well. Sometimes breast feeding can be painful to the mother especially a new mother and in the initial days which may disturb the beautiful bond of breast feeding between the baby and mother and may be a cause of stress in the already stresses and under confident new mother. Here , I discuss the most common problems we see in mothers during our routine well baby visits.
1: NOT ENOUGH MILK PRODUCTION
New mothers usually perceive their milk production as less and they are usually unsure of the fact that breast feeding is taking care of their baby’s appetite. I have discussed in the previous blog that how a mother can know that breast feeding is sufficient for her baby. In the initial days , milk production is less but sufficient for your baby as the stomach is just like a lemon size in the initial days. So just feed your baby and immunise your baby through colostrum. Refer to my previous blog how to know breast feeding is sufficient for your baby.
2: SORE NIPPLES
Prevention is better than cure. Best way to prevent sore nipples is frequent breast feeding and correct attachment and positioning. If the baby does not want to feed and you are getting more feed best is to manually or through breast pump express your milk . Avoid wearing very tight and synthetic bras and clothes. If sore nipples develop, you can apply your milk on your sore nipples. Let your nipple air dry after each feed. You can try nursing in different breast feeding positions. Change your nursing pads frequently if soiled. Don’t wash your breast with soap and water after each feed just washing and wiping with plain water will be enough.
3. ENGORGED BREASTS
Symptoms include hard , painful and swollen breasts. Mothers may also experience low grade fever. Again the solution lies in breast feeding frequently with correct attachment and positioning. Warm compresses, frequent expression, breast massage, cool compresses really help. Nip care creams also goes a long way to prevent soreness and preventing engorgement and cracked nipples.
Other problems are mastitis and blocked ducts which are not very common. Remember correct positioning and attachment is the best promising prevention for any breast feeding related problems. If the above solutions also do not solve your problems then better to refer to your lactational consultant.
Take care
With loads of love to your little angels!!
