HOW TO KNOW  BREAST MILK IS SUFFICIENT FOR YOUR BABY ?

DEAR PARENTS,

On the occassion of breast feeding week, i would like to empower all the new mothers with some basics of breast feeding. My next few write ups will be dedicated to breast feeding. Most of the new mothers i meet during the well baby rounds are underconfident regarding the milk production , stressed regarding whether the baby is getting enough milk or not and end up giving formula feeds to the baby. Here is some information that will help you regarding how to know whether your milk is sufficient for your baby.

1. BREAST IS BEST

It is very important to understand the importance of breast feeding. Breast feeding is just like providing immunonutrients to your baby. Formula milk does not contain even if fortified the immunoboosters and the micronutrients required for good brain and eye development. Taking stress for milk production- is it sufficient? Is my baby hungry? What if I does not get feed? These stressful thoughts will furthur depress your milk production. Remember breast milk decreases when stress, anxiety and fear is there. So be stress free. When God has given the ability to give birth then let Him take care of the milk production.

2. INITIAL REQUIREMENT OF MILK FOR THE BABY

Baby stomach size is very small (as small as lemon) in the initial days so baby does not require lot of milk to gulp on. Colustrum is sufficient for the baby in the initial 2-3 days.

3. URINE OUTPUT

The baby may pass urine once in 48 hours for the first 48 hours. After that we say, the baby should pass urine atleast 5-6 times in a day if baby is drinking enough milk.

4. BABY SLEEP PATTERN

If baby is sleeping after feeding and getting calm after feeding, baby is getting enough milk.

5.BABY WEIGHT

If baby is gaining weight on breast feeding that means baby is having adequate feeding. For an average term baby baby will gain weight approximately 20g per day. Remember, the baby losses weight initially for first 7 to 10 days. That is completely physiological!!!!

6. LEAKING BREAST

Leaking is a sign of abundance. But leaking usually will not occur during the initial 3-4 days. So, that must not be misinterpreted as less milk production.

Breast feeding not only provides immunity to your child but also helps to prevent the babies from deadly diseases in the short and long runs!!! It is the best gift a mother can give to her child!!!!
HAPPY BREAST FEEDING ☺
